Why Invest in Cashmere?

Cashmere has been regarded as one of the world's most noble materials for centuries. Cashmere clothing isn't just a purchase — it's an investment in comfort, style, and durability. In this article, we explain why cashmere is worth its price and how to choose the highest quality cashmere products.
What Is Cashmere?
Cashmere is wool obtained from the undercoat of cashmere goats (Capra hircus), raised primarily in Mongolia, China, and the Kashmir region of India. Each goat produces only 150-200 grams of cashmere per year — which explains why this material is so precious and exclusive.
The process of obtaining cashmere is incredibly labor-intensive. In spring, when goats naturally shed their winter undercoat, herders hand-comb the delicate fibers. The cashmere is then sorted, cleaned, and processed — before reaching production, it goes through over a dozen stages of treatment.
5 Reasons to Invest in Cashmere
1. Unmatched Warmth Without the Weight
Cashmere is up to three times warmer than traditional sheep's wool, yet significantly lighter. Cashmere fibers have a diameter of just 14-19 microns (human hair measures 50-100 microns), making the material incredibly delicate and lightweight. A cashmere sweater weighs a fraction of a wool one, yet keeps you far warmer.
2. Incredible Softness
Touch cashmere and you'll instantly feel the difference. Ultra-fine fibers don't scratch or irritate the skin — it's the perfect material even for people with sensitive skin or allergies to traditional wool. Cashmere's softness doesn't diminish over time — quite the opposite, with each wear the material becomes even more delicate.
3. Built to Last
A well-cared-for cashmere sweater can last up to 10-15 years. This makes it one of the most cost-effective purchases in your wardrobe. Do the math: if an 800 PLN cashmere sweater lasts 10 years, the cost per season is just 80 PLN — less than many fast fashion items that end up in the bin after one season.
4. Versatile Styling
Cashmere clothing goes with practically everything. A classic cashmere sweater can be worn:
- To work with an elegant skirt or trousers
- On weekends with jeans and sneakers
- For an evening out with a silk skirt
- While traveling — cashmere doesn't wrinkle and takes up little space
Cashmere is the quintessence of quiet luxury — understated elegance that needs no logos or flashy patterns.
5. A Sustainable Material
In an era of growing environmental awareness, cashmere earns extra points. It's fully biodegradable, comes from a renewable source, and — with proper care — lasts far longer than synthetic alternatives. By investing in a cashmere product instead of several cheaper substitutes, you reduce your environmental footprint.
How to Recognize Quality Cashmere
Not all cashmere is created equal. Here's what to look for when buying:
Fiber Thickness
The highest quality cashmere has fibers measuring 14-15.5 microns in diameter. The thinner the fibers, the softer and more delicate the material. At Miss Leisure, we use exclusively cashmere with fibers under 16 microns.
Fiber Length
Longer fibers (over 36mm) mean a more durable product that pills less. Short fibers quickly form unwanted bobbles on the material's surface.
The Touch Test
Real, high-quality cashmere feels silky soft but not slippery. If the material feels too smooth or plastic to the touch — it likely contains synthetic blends.
Label and Origin
Look for products labeled "100% cashmere" with origin information. The finest cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia, where the extreme climate causes goats to produce the most delicate undercoats.
How to Care for Cashmere
Proper care is the key to years of cashmere longevity:
Washing
- Hand wash in lukewarm water (max 30C) with hair shampoo or a special cashmere detergent
- Gently squeeze — never rub or wring
- Rinse in water at the same temperature — sudden temperature changes cause shrinking
Drying
- Dry flat — never hang wet cashmere, as it will stretch out
- Lay on a clean towel and gently reshape to its original form
- Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources
Storage
- Folded, not hung — cashmere is too delicate for hangers
- In a cotton cover with a lavender sachet (to repel moths)
- Give cashmere a rest — don't wear the same sweater two days in a row
Dealing with Pilling
Light pilling in the first weeks of wear is natural and doesn't indicate low quality. Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver — never pull bobbles off by hand.
